 Osteopathy and pregnancy

In a short time, a lot changes in the body of a pregnant woman. The abdomen grows, causing the center of gravity, the position of the spine and the pelvis to change. In addition, the pressure on the diaphragm increases, pressure is created on the nerves and there are many other changes. When the body is unable to properly absorb these changes, complaints can arise.

 Development of complaints

Osteopathie zwangerschap

During pregnancy, a loss of movement can arise in the back. Before pregnancy, the body was able to absorb this loss of movement by compensating a bit and therefore showed no complaints. During pregnancy this is no longer possible because the full mobility of the back is necessary to accommodate the growth of the baby, change of the center of gravity and softening of the ligaments.

Less mobility in the back means that the body searches for other solutions. This can affect pressure on other structures such as the nervous system, pelvis, bladder and stomach. This change in load can lead to back problems, pelvic complaints, tingling in the legs, tingling in the arms, bladder complaints, stomach complaints and fatigue complaints.

An example is described above from the back, but loss of movement elsewhere in the body can also cause complaints. Treatment aimed at loss of movement gives the body the flexibility it needs to properly absorb the pregnancy.

Treatment goals

During pregnancy

Optimizing the cooperation between muscles, tendons, bones, bands, joints, nerves and blood vessels so that the body is able to absorb changes in the body well. Complaints that can be treated well are back complaints, neck complaints, pelvic complaints, stomach complaints, bladder complaints, groin complaints, constipation, tingling in the arms / legs, complaints around the shoulder blades and headache.

After pregnancy

It is possible that complaints will worsen or arise after childbirth. During pregnancy, there was a lot of tension on the back, pelvis, diaphragm and chest. In addition, the delivery is accompanied by a lot of force, which can disrupt the cooperation in the body. A consultation 6-8 weeks after delivery is recommended to resolve any loss of movement.
